F.H. Furr is proud to partner with numerous charities and organizations throughout our area and the DMV. We wanted to take the chance to educate our readers about them and the work that they do!
We are proud to be working with Alex’s Army to bring awareness to finding a cure for childhood cancers.
Alex’s Army actively participates in awareness events such as Curefest DC, Rallies at the NIH, and awareness campaigns to help spread the word that kids deserve MORE! They host events such as their annual 5K and Fun Run, Battle of the Bands, Driving for a Cure, and more to not only fundraise toward their mission but to also spread the word of the lack of funding Childhood Cancers are currently receiving. Childhood Cancers are the #1 leading cause of death by disease in the United States yet combined receive less than 4% of the National Cancer Research Budget.
Alex Green was a Haymarket resident and a student at Bull Run Middle School. He was diagnosed at 5 years old with Stage IV Wilms’ Tumor. He battled the disease for years until June 2016 when he succumbed to the disease. Alex was quite the athlete! While he was going through his treatments and even after becoming paralyzed from the waist down, he played sports like basketball and sled hockey. Alex had an alarm on his phone for “20 push-ups” twice a day. In early 2016, when he went into hospice care and couldn’t do his push-ups any longer, people in the community started doing the push-up and sending videos to Alex’s family and started the hashtag #Twenty4Alex!
Coming up this April 8th, for their celebration event on what would have been Alex’s 13th Birthday, they’ll be joining together at Battlefield High School to attempt to break the Guinness World Record title for most people performing push ups! Currently, the record is 1645 people and they are looking to have at least 2000 attend the event!
If you’d like to join the celebration and venture to break the record, you can find out more information on the Alex’s Army site, HERE! We hope to see you there!
